Within the project “Improving the opportunities for integration and education of Roma in Serbia”, REF in September 2017 awarded grants to 4 non-governmental organizations that implemented small scale projects as part of the grant scheme “Improving the opportunities for reintegration of Roma returnees in Serbia”. Partner organizations implemented project activities in Subotica, Vladicin Han, Surdulica, Leskovac and Nis. In all locations, Roma returnee families have been provided with support for enrollment of children in PPPs and primary schools and assistance in collecting documentation necessary for the nostrification of foreign diplomas and certificates. Within the project, non-governmental organizations provided support in mastering Serbian language and other subjects, for a total of 251 children aged 5.5-10 years. Children from returnee families attending 5-8 grades received tutoring support in the form of individual lessons for the purpose of their successful reintegration into the education system of Serbia.
After one year of implementation, successfully completed small-scale projects have contributed to the increased rate of enrollment in PPPs and schools, the increase in the average grade of returnee children, and the promotion of comprehensive inclusion of children in the education system.
