Roma Education Fund Representative Office in the Republic of Serbia announcement regarding spread of COVID-19 virus in Serbia and International Roma Day

The scale and range of the global pandemic of COVID-19 is causing an enormous threat to public health and safety, as well as economic and social implications on the lives of all citizens.

In the context of a general crisis in all parts of everyday life, there is an increased risk of expanding the social exclusion of Roma, one of the most vulnerable and poverty affected social groups. The position of Roma national minority is often characterized by poor housing conditions, lack of utilities, poor health situation, and an overall poor socio-economic status primarily caused by precarious forms of work.

The consequences of the pandemic, combined with the declaration of a state of emergency in the Republic of Serbia, will inevitably affect the health, social, economic and educational segment of life of Roma and confront them with additional risks – anxiety and mental health deterioration.

Roma Education Fund Representative Office in the Republic of Serbia believes that the measures taken by relevant governmental institutions and non-governmental organizations significantly contribute to maintaining a spirit of solidarity. Moreover, Roma Education Fund remains committed to invest all available efforts and resources on continuously working on preventing further spread of COVID-19 virus among the Roma population. Through assessing individual needs on the field Roma Education Fund will continue developing new solutions and methods of implementing activities aimed at preserving the health and well-being of Roma men and women.

At the same time, Roma Education Fund will continue to support the education of Roma children and young people, and promote accurate informing and protective measures in all cities and municipalities in Serbia.

In order to mitigate the effects of the pandemic, Roma Education Fund is devoted to strengthening and fostering solidarity, community and cooperation, both among all relevant state institutions, the civil sector, associates, and within the Roma community itself.

In light of the International Roma Day, which is marked on April 8, Roma Education Fund emphasizes the scope of challenges the Roma community faces on a daily basis, as well as the need for an integrated approach and urgent joint action in reducing the effects of the pandemic.
